Since the last few years, Soy has gained a lot of importance especially considering its vegan food. Soy products are great sources of plant-based protein and happen to be
considered complete protein which means it has all the nine essential amino acids.

You all must have read everywhere and am sure very well know about the misconception that if you are a vegetarian your diet might not include enough protein that is needed daily based on dietary guidelines however nearly all whole foods contain some protein so it’s best to stick to whole foods rather than processed foods as they are low in protein, fiber and other important nutrients that your body need. Soy is a great alternative to red meat. Soy is a complete protein that has all nine essential amino acids.

Let’s take a look at the nutritional benefits of Soy:

  • High in fiber.
  • High in protein.
  • Low in saturated fat.
  • Cholesterol free.
  • Lactose-free.
  • A good source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • A source of antioxidants.

If you want to increase your intake of soy:

  • Choose whole soy foods like soy milk, soy yogurt, soy bread, soy chunks, edamame (also known as green soybean), miso, and tofu.
  • Check ingredient lists to make sure that the soy foods you buy are not made from soy isolates but whole soybeans.
  • When reading the label make sure that products such as cereals contain soy protein and not just added isoflavone.

To me, soy is a classic health food! It has loads of vitamins and minerals which are fundamental for reducing the risk of chronic disease and helps you fill up and feel satisfied because of the fiber content. Research has shown that if you include more plant-based protein in your diet it has a clear benefit of lowering blood pressure. As you all know how important fiber for your diet is, it helps promote a healthy gastrointestinal system and reduces cholesterol.

Vegetarians can get all the important nutrients from soy foods. Soy is enriched with B-vitamins, iron, zinc, and an array of antioxidants. Many soy foods are enriched with vitamin B 12, calcium, and vitamin D.

The best part is using soy in your meal is easy, you can add tofu in your favorite stir-fry, you can enjoy edamame as a great snack, eat roasted soy nuts, try soy yogurt, use soy sausage instead of high-fat beef or pork sausage.

Start eating soy if you aren’t, I am sure once you start eating it you will love it and will feel good about the benefits it has to offer to your health.
